Redneck Trophy Hunter

True Story-
To the owner of the big green Ford pickup....You know who you are! I have nominated you for the "Trigger Happy Redneck Trophy Hunter for 2015" Congratulations smile emoticon
Fall is definitely here. The season of harvesting our gardens and preparing our pantries and freezers for a long, hard, bitter cold winter that history tells us lay ahead.

DSCN3467.JPG
But here in Southern Oregon it's a little sweeter.
We can harvest even outdoor almost 9 months a year and hunting season is something the men of the Rogue Valley have done for generations. Each season is a tradition regenerated a honest weekend or two at least “out” with just the guys - and fellow hunting gals also :). So I greatly appreciate the Sport of hunting and of a “Real Hunter”.
I was raised locally in Merlin, Oregon, and my Father is full blooded Native American Indian he was raised mostly up north in the Seattle and he “IS a proud hunter. Did I like it?  Nope not at all infact I dreaded this time of year as a kid.
It never failed it happened every year that I can remember, and we never knew when. After a long walk home from our school bus stop, out of nowhere and when we least expected it. There it was hanging by its feet from “Our” tire swing because it was the biggest Oak tree in the yard. Dressed in a thin cottony like cloth sometimes with the head removed but most of the time that  “Trophy” was proudly displayed. I was always so traumatized each season and for many years I went through a save Bambi strike and my parents couldn't get me to eat meat at all, but I would also get over it pretty quick or I would’ve starved because my father is a real hunter and filled his tag nearly every season. I am proud to say I learned a true respect for wildlife and more importantly for living with the wildlife. To this day he has only ever taken one worthy buck from our own property and it was on the last day of the season so he followed his instincts, filled his tag and harvested his game for his family.
I have just recently been bitten by the season once again.       As an adult I am also a but of another kind. I respect nature to the fullest and choose to respect her in my own way. This beauty has been cruising through this location a couple of times daily to and from his trips to the nearby Rogue River. I saw him through a scope that had no cross-hairs. Just two days ago. So i’m glad I was ready and got at least these few pictures when I did. :) DSCN3696.JPGDSCN3694.JPG
Because today sadly some “Trigger Happy Redneck Trophy Hunter” took him just because it was “Easy”!!!
I can imagine him proudly showing off his “trophy” to family and friends, If they only knew that his trophy had been living in the backyard of the very property he was born on and now killed on. You should be so proud of yourself ;-) good job!!!!!
So this message is to the owner of the big green Ford truck… You know who you are and I hope this message finds its way to your inbox. I’d just like to say that you give the name “Redneck” an entirely new meaning in the worst way. We’re talking deliverance standards in my opinion. It’s certain that you have no manners and have no never owned your own land or respect for any neighbors but that's ok.
I believe that timing and circumstances play an enormous influence in the life of each living being and I also believe in karma.
Best of luck to you !!!

GONNA BE A BEAR

GONNA BE A BEAR

Bear.jpg
In this life, I'm a woman. In my next life. I'd like to come back as a bear. you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that.
Before you hibernate, your supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that too.
When you are a girl bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you're sleeping and wake to partially grown cute cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that.
If you are a momma bear, everyone knows you mean business, you swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too, I could deal with that.
If you're a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat.
Yup, gonna be a bear!

I am getting excited I must say. My Moultry trail cam has been out in the field for a week, but not on purpose. Ran into a little tuck trouble..
This is the wrong date and time - Correct date Aug. 1 2015 apx. time 6:15 pm
Our first time putting the Moultry trail cam to use was at my house I set it up for the night. After reviewing the instruction book I chose the recommended setting "Auto" and went on about our day. Later that night ..... ;-) So we know it works..... :)

Oregon Mining History Research

***** Searching for Gold in the Rogue River Valley *****
Nathaniel “Yank” McNair was responsible  for the first permanent settlement on the  terrace now known as the Rand National  Historic Site. It was here that McNair staked  the Big Yank Placer Mine. In August 1874,  Yank discovered rich gold quartz veins  about one mile downstream from his placer  claim. Within a few months, Yankville, a  small logging and sawmill camp, emerged on McNair’s placer claim to supply lumber  for the mining operations downstream.  However, limited access and poor mining  technology soon resulted in a failed exploitation and the demise of the little camp of  Yankville. Around 1900, the Rand Mining Company  purchased the Big Yank Placer mining  property, which included the former site of  Yankville. In 1905, the company surveyed  the terrace to lay out lots for a town site they  called Rand. The name Rand came from  Witwatersrand, a gold-laden ridge in South  Africa. In 1906, the Rand Mining Company  joined the Almeda Mining Company to form  the Almeda Consolidated Mines Company.   Several dwellings and the Rand School were  constructed on the town site.
***** Jacksonville, Oregon *****

With the discovery of gold in Jacksonville,  Oregon, in 1852, Oregon’s Willamette Valley farmers made their way south over the  California-Oregon Trail into the Rogue River  Valley in hopes of striking it rich. Miners  swarmed the Rogue River and other rivers  in the area scouring the banks for gold and  displacing local Native American bands. The  most accessible and valuable deposits were  largely extracted during the 1850s, however,  mining still continues throughout the valley  today.

The Rand National Historic Site (Rand) is  located in southwestern Oregon approximately 25 miles northwest of Grants Pass,  Oregon, and 3 miles downstream from the  community of Galice. Rand is located on a  terrace on the west side of the Rogue National Wild and Scenic River in steep, mountainous country with elevations ranging from  700 feet at the river’s edge to 4,000 feet on  nearby peaks. Baker Park Boat Landing - A Beautiful Place To Drown Despite the Warnings...

The Rogue River is a beautiful place to spend your next summer vacation.
Offering swimming, rafting, kayaking & jet skiing just to name a few ways to cool off.

Baker Park Boat Landing is conveniently located in the heart of Grants Pass.
It is a very popular gathering place for many local residences and visitors to the Rogue Valley every year. The bridge is informally known as the Grants Pass Parkway Bridge.
Baker Park is located on the south side of the river near the bridge.
    Remember
    Despite the Warnings:
With a fast moving current and wicked undertows
Every year there is at least one tragic drowning in this popular swimming hole that could have probable been prevented.
Aug 17 2010 - Drowning victim was only one to go missing

June 18 2011 - Search for missing Rogue River swimmer called off
July 31 2014 - Boy, 7, drowns in Rogue River near Grants Pass park

Gardening In & Around the Pacific Northwest

    Soil and Preparation
Soil management is the most complex learning task of the gardener. A through understanding of soil formulation and chemistry is not necessary for a good garden, and in fact, would require several years of study. But the ability to recognize different soil types, a basic understanding of plant nutrition, and a working knowledge of fertilizers, soil additives and should not be neglected.

Government agencies in Oregon, Washington , and British Columbia provide low cost soil tests to home gardeners, and will diagnose insect problems and plant diseases. Always inquire first about what sort of sample to send them before you mail them bugs or dirt. For soil samples, the agencies provide special containers and directions on how to collect samples; for insect and diseases they can advise you by phone what sort of sample they'll need. For more information please contact your county Court House for a list of Cooperative Extension Services.
